Question: What are the negative outlooks on the place?
The opening line “THE ever expanding Occupy Wall Street movement, with encampments now not only in Lower Manhattan but also in Washington, London and other cities, proves among other things that no matter how instrumental new media have become in spreading protest these days, nothing replaces people taking to the streets.” Is really what stands out and sets the stage for this article.
The Power of place is that we can physically and emotionally connect to a situation at hand. The media can only do so much to describe something, but to really understand them and what is truly going on, you have to be there to witness it.
At a protest, it is different from communicating the community needs online. The protest becomes a common ground where the people can really show in numbers the great mass that supports a particular subject. Being there is more powerful than just witnessing it through a screen, which is why the experience can never be overpowered.
There are also things online that can’t necessarily be written about or recorded. Thousands of people are going to witness one thing differently. Just as if you were there, you would witness it differently yourself.
